CURRENT WORK
Mahram Bilqis Archaeological Project
Marib, Yemen (1998-present)

In 1998, Merilyn once again stepped onto the territory once explored by her brother at the Mahram Bilqis in Marib, Yemen and resumed excavations at the request of the Government of Yemen.

The Mahram Bilqis, also known as The Awam Temple, was the main temple of the Sabaean national moon god, Almaqah. The Awam Temple had a highly significant socioeconomic function in the Sabaean society and was the main pilgrimage site and the most significant religious institution in ancient Yemen.

The exciting details of the work at Mahram Bilqis can be found here.

Under the direction of Merilyn Phillips Hodgson:
PAST WORK

Answering the calls of the Government of Yemen and former AFSM team epigrapher, Dr. Albert Jamme, Mrs. Phillips Hodgson agreed to re-activate the foundation in order to resume the important work begun by her older brother. Beginning with geological and geographical reconnaissance of the Wadi al-Jubah, the archaeological field work has now become her passion.

Under the direction of Dr. Wendell Phillips:
  • Ten years of expedition (1952-62) in Oman primarily concentrating on the Dhofar region.
  • The Yemen expedition in Marib at the Mahram Bilqis, in 1951 and 1952; and
  • The South Arabian Expeditions I and II excavating the Qatabanian capital of Timna, the Timna Temple, and Hajar bin Humeid which were the first major scientific expeditions ever to explore South Arabia and determine the correct historical chronology and establish a solid basis for the paleography of South Arabia in the spring of 1950 and winter/spring 1951 respectively; and
  • The Monastery of St. Catherine in the Sinai Peninsula; microfilming more than two million pages of ancient manuscripts in cooperation with the United States Library of Congress in 1949.
